A Life Beyond Acting: The Pilot’s Passion
Before his acting career, Mukul Dev was a trained commercial pilot, having completed his aviation training at the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi in Raebareli. He worked as a pilot for nearly a decade and even ran an aeronautical training institute. His passion for aviation remained a significant part of his life, as evidenced by his final Instagram post in February 2025, where he shared a video from the cockpit of an aircraft, captioned with a haunting reference to “dark forebodings.” The post has since struck a chord with fans, who see it as a poignant reflection of his state of mind.
Personal Struggles and Tributes
Mukul Dev’s passing comes after a period of personal hardship. According to close friend and co-actor Vindu Dara Singh, Mukul had been deeply affected by the loss of his parents, particularly his mother, and had become increasingly reclusive. “After his parents’ death, Mukul was keeping to himself. He would not even step out of the house or meet anyone. His health deteriorated in the last few days, and he was in the hospital,” Vindu told India Today.
The actor is survived by his elder brother, actor Rahul Dev, his nephew Sidhant Dev, and his daughter Sia, aged 21, from his marriage to Shilpa Dev, from whom he had been separated for several years.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans alike. Actor Manoj Bajpayee, who shared the screen with Mukul in Dastak, wrote on Instagram, “Mukul was a brother in spirit, an artist whose warmth and passion were unmatched. Gone too soon, too young. Miss you meri jaan… until we meet again. Om Shanti.” Actress Deepshikha Nagpal, a close friend, shared a throwback photo on Instagram Stories, expressing her disbelief: “Can’t believe this. RIP.” Punjabi actor Gippy Grewal also paid his respects, writing, “May his soul rest in peace.”
A Lasting Legacy
Mukul Dev’s final film, Anth The End (2022), marked the culmination of a career that spanned diverse roles and industries. His work in Son of Sardaar 2, set to release posthumously, is expected to be a fitting tribute to his comedic talent, with Vindu Dara Singh noting it as Mukul’s “swansong” that will “spread joy and happiness to viewers.”
The Indian film industry and fans worldwide continue to celebrate Mukul Dev’s contributions, from his early days as a model and pilot to his memorable performances on screen. His last rites are scheduled to take place in Delhi on May 24, 2025.
